This article describes how to configure and download the data exported from the Watts Clever STC-4002 Wireless Energy Monitor using the USB connection and a terminal emulator program.
This article assumes that you have already successfully installed the required USB cable drivers.
Connecting the USB Cable to the PC.
When the USB Cable is plugged into the computer you should see a new entry in Device Manager as shown in the screen shown to the right. This entry displays the com port number that has been automatically assigned to the cable (COM6 in this example).
Port settings .
When you right click on the driver in the previous screen shot in device manager and select “properties”. us can select the “port settings” table to display the com port settings, the picture to the right shows the correct (normally defaulted) communication settings.
In this example these settings will be required to configure in you terminal emulator software.
Using incorrect settings can result in either no data being received or data that is displayed as garbage.

Reading the raw data using a terminal emulator program.

Just about any terminal emulator program will be able to be used to download data from the STC-4002. Windows XP has a program titled HyperTerm. However thsi is no longer available in Windows Vista or greater, we like the free terminal client call putty which has a rich function set that makes it a great program for you toolbox.

Setting up Putty to connect to STC-4002
The screen shot to the right displays the Putty configuration screen and the settings required to connect to the STC-4002.
Once connected you will start to see an XML link dump of data from the STC-4002 approximately every 6 seconds.
Note: From time to time the data from the STC-4002 will not be a complete message dump that includes history. This is normal behaviour.
Using programs like Putty, you can save the data to a session log file for further analysis.
