CurrentCost\Watts Clever "CLASSIC" USB Cable compatibility

With reference to a recent comment from Trevor, we have been investigating a very small number of customers who have had problems with driver installation on Windows XP computers, and in all cases these have been laptops running Windows XP.

Trevor commented:

I have the STC-4002 Watts Clever working on one of my PC's.
I found it will work only on a USB Universal Host Controller
It would not work on either a USB Open Host Controller or a USB Enhanced Host Controller
Which type of controllers are on the PC can be found from the device manager.
Some PC's have both the Enhanced type and the Universal type.
You have to try all USB ports to find which are of the Universal type
The reason seems to be in the USB to Serial cord electronics firmware.
As usual only the latest technology is supported.
It seems that the Universal controller is the latest.
Regards, Trevor

From our tests we have determined that the cable does work on desktops and laptops regardless of the type of USB Controller i.e. USB Universal Host Controller, USB Open Host Controller and USB Enhanced Host Controller. We also note that the only reported failures of this type are from people running Windows XP on Laptops, this may support Trevor's suggestion that there is a problem that could be based on older hardware.

The following screen shows the machine that I am currently using which contains hardware manufactured in 2009 and running Windows 7 32 bit:

The USB cable works in this case regardless of the controller type i.e. Enhanced,  OpenHCD, This doe not support Trevor's experience where the cable only works with the Universal Host Controller.

We have not closed this issue and continue to research the issues reported, however we are heading towards a possible chip set compatibility issue on some earlier laptops as a primary suspect.

We thank Trevor for sharing his experience and posting his comments to help others.

In summary

We have only received issues from customers with Windows XP and laptop based machines.

We have not received any reported issues with cables installations on the following configurations:

  • Windows XP on Desktop Computers
  • Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit on laptops and desktops
  • Windows 7 has been tested on 32 and 64 bit installations on Desktop and Laptops
